Ostomy supplies explained: pouches, barriers, and accessories

The right ostomy supplies — well-fitted and changed on schedule — are what keep the skin healthy and daily life predictable. Here's how the pieces fit together.

Educational overview; coverage details verified against Medicare (CMS) sources.Educational information, not medical advice — talk with your physician about what's right for you.

One-piece vs. two-piece systems

  • One-piece — the pouch and skin barrier are joined; simpler and lower-profile.
  • Two-piece — a separate barrier and pouch that snap or stick together, so you can change the pouch without removing the barrier from your skin.

Skin barriers (wafers)

The barrier protects the skin and seals around the stoma. Openings come cut-to-fit (you trim to your stoma), pre-cut (a fixed size), or moldable (shaped by hand). Flat or convex shapes suit different stoma and body types.

Drainable vs. closed pouches

  • Drainable — emptied and reused through the day; common for ileostomies and looser output.
  • Closed — removed and replaced when full; often used for formed colostomy output.

Accessories that help

  • Barrier rings and paste — fill uneven skin and improve the seal.
  • Skin-barrier wipes and adhesive remover — protect and clean the skin.
  • Stoma powder — helps with minor skin irritation.
