Does Medicare cover enteral nutrition (tube feeding)?

Short answer: Yes — Medicare Part B covers enteral nutrition, feeding supplies, and pumps under the prosthetic device benefit when you need tube feeding because of a permanent condition and can't get adequate nutrition by mouth.

Who qualifies?

Medicare covers this when your records show all of the following. Your prescriber's documentation is what establishes each point:

  • You receive nutrition through a feeding tube (an enteral access device).
  • You have a permanent condition that either keeps food from reaching the small bowel, or prevents the small bowel from digesting/absorbing food.
  • Adequate nutrition isn't possible through diet changes or oral supplements.
  • Your treating provider documents the condition and its expected long-term duration.

What Medicare covers

  • Enteral formula, feeding tubes and supplies, and — when gravity feeding isn't clinically adequate — a feeding pump, under the prosthetic device benefit.
  • Usual limits: up to about a 1-month supply of formula at a time; tube and pump coverage follows Medicare's documentation rules.
  • Medicare Part B generally pays 80% of the Medicare-approved amount after you meet the annual Part B deductible; the remaining share is your responsibility (or a secondary plan's, such as Medicaid or a supplement).

Coverage details and amounts are set by CMS and can change each year. We confirm your current, specific coverage before anything is ordered.

Common questions

Does Medicare cover a feeding pump?+

Yes, when documentation shows gravity feeding isn't adequate for a specific clinical reason (such as reflux and aspiration, severe diarrhea, dumping syndrome, or a slow required feeding rate). Otherwise Medicare covers gravity or syringe feeding supplies.

Does Medicare cover oral nutrition drinks?+

No — Medicare's enteral nutrition benefit covers formula delivered through a feeding tube, not nutrition taken by mouth.

What do I need to get started?+

Your treating provider's order and documentation that you meet the criteria above. Start the eligibility check or call an agent — we confirm your benefits and coordinate the order and paperwork with your prescriber's office. There's no cost or commitment to check.
