Does Medicare cover closed-system (sterile kit) catheters?

Short answer: Yes — Medicare Part B covers sterile closed-system catheter kits under the prosthetic device benefit when you need intermittent catheterization and also meet one additional criterion, such as recurrent urinary tract infections, immunosuppression, a spinal cord injury, or living in a nursing facility.

Who qualifies?

Medicare covers this when your records show all of the following. Your prescriber's documentation is what establishes each point:

  • You already qualify for intermittent catheters — permanent urinary retention or a neurogenic bladder that requires catheterization.
  • You also meet at least one added criterion for a sterile kit: for example you are immunosuppressed (including from a spinal cord injury), have documented vesico-ureteral reflux, live in a nursing facility, or had two or more urinary tract infections in the past year on a sterile-technique (non-kit) program.
  • Your treating provider has documented the added criterion and ordered the closed-system kit.

What Medicare covers

  • A sterile closed-system (pre-lubricated, self-contained) intermittent catheter kit, in medically necessary quantities — generally up to the same 200-per-month limit as other intermittent catheters.
  • For people with a spinal cord injury, Medicare's 2026 policy update recognizes the need for sterile technique — ask us to confirm how the current criteria apply to your situation.
  • Medicare Part B generally pays 80% of the Medicare-approved amount after you meet the annual Part B deductible; the remaining share is your responsibility (or a secondary plan's, such as Medicaid or a supplement).

Common questions

What's the difference between a closed-system kit and a plain intermittent catheter?+

A closed-system kit is a self-contained, pre-lubricated catheter inside a sterile sleeve or collection bag, designed to reduce touch contamination. A plain (straight) intermittent catheter is used with separate lubricant. Medicare covers the straight catheter for anyone who qualifies for catheterization, but covers the kit only when you also meet an added criterion.

I get frequent UTIs — does that qualify me for a kit?+

Often, yes. Two or more urinary tract infections in the past 12 months while using a sterile-technique (non-kit) program is one of Medicare's qualifying criteria for a closed-system kit. Your provider documents the infections; we help confirm coverage.

What do I need to get started?+

Your treating provider's order and documentation that you meet the criteria above. Start the eligibility check or call an agent — we confirm your benefits and coordinate the order and paperwork with your prescriber's office. There's no cost or commitment to check.
