Compression garments for lymphedema: types and how they help

Gradient compression garments are a mainstay of daily lymphedema care. They apply graduated pressure — firmer lower down, gentler higher up — to help keep lymph fluid moving and prevent it from re-accumulating after therapy.

What compression garments do

After swelling is reduced (often with bandaging and therapy), a well-fitted compression garment helps maintain that progress day to day. The graduated pressure supports fluid movement and helps protect the skin. Your therapist recommends the right compression level for you.

Daytime vs. nighttime garments

  • Daytime garments — sleeves, stockings, gloves, and gauntlets worn during active hours; firmer, graduated compression.
  • Nighttime garments — softer, padded garments or wraps designed for rest, when you're not moving to help drainage.

Flat-knit vs. circular-knit

  • Circular-knit — seamless, thinner, often used for milder or earlier-stage swelling.
  • Flat-knit — made with a seam and thicker fabric; often chosen for more advanced swelling, unusual limb shapes, or skin changes, because it's less likely to cut in.

Getting the right fit

Fit is everything — a garment that's too loose won't help, and one that's too tight can cause harm. Garments come ready-to-wear (standard sizes) or custom-made to your measurements. A trained fitter and your therapist determine what you need.
